Number of home burglaries (almost) at the level of before lockdown '
During the intelligent lockdown, when the Dutch stayed at home, the number of home burglaries fell drastically. Last month, when the corona measures were relaxed, it turned out that burglars struck more often. In the meantime, the number of home burglaries is again (almost) at the same level as before the lockdown.
This is apparent from new figures from the National Police, which the AD writes about today. Insurers also notice that people are more often confronted with home burglaries.
Halved in April and May
For example, burglars in the Netherlands struck 510 times last week, that is only 60 burglaries less than in the same week last year. In April and May of this year, the number of home burglaries was halved compared to last year.
During the intelligent Lockdown, from March to the end of June, a total of 6591 burglaries were reported. That is more than a third less than in the same period last year, when 11,041 burglaries were reported to the police.
Sybren van der Velden, who deals with the police with the police, is not surprised. "Because of the relaxations, more Dutch people go to work and it gets busier on the road. Burglars see their chances rise rapidly," he tells the newspaper.
Reopened
According to the police, reopening the borders will also cause more home burglaries. Gangs from Eastern Europe and South America can therefore strike more easily.
Insurers also come in more reports of home burglaries than during the Lockdown, the AD writes. According to insurer Interpolis, 'the number of reports even runs parallel to the relaxation of the RIVM'.
Catch -up
Coen Staal, chairman of the National Burglary Prevention Weeks Foundation, already said earlier that burglars currently want to catch up. "The thieves have not received a compensation for the past lesser period."
